Will we soon have a NevadaCountyNow.com online news

The election season just around the corner.  Our locals have often complained that we only have limited real time news sources, one daily newspaper, and two radio stations that have a local news focus to bring us balanced news on the election.  There are also several local blogs, that from time to time profess to having news scoops, and several that provide in depth analysis of local news.

But, we may soon have some competition. A local lefty blogger, before he went on hiatus for two weeks, posted a story about some ex-Swift Communications staffers launching online news sites in Carson City and South Lake Tahoe. The sites are CarsonNow.com and SouthTahoeNow.com.

Kirk Caraway who used to work for Swift Communications, the parent company of The Union is the founder of these sites:

  • Your One Stop for Carson City News
  • Founder/General Manager: Kirk Caraway
  • Editor: Jeff Munson
  • Multimedia Producer: Darla Bayer
  • Advertising Director: Charlie Pankey
  • Advertising Representative: Joanie Colburn
  • Contributing writer: Sam Bauman

While doing a little research on the internet, I discovered that Kirk Caraway had also reserved NevadaCountyNow.com in April of 2010.

Registrant:

  • Kirk Caraway
  • 1577 Caboose Drive
  • Carson City, Nevada 89701
  • United States

Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (http://www.godaddy.com)

  • Domain Name: NEVADACOUNTYNOW.COM
  • Created on: 25-Apr-10
  • Expires on: 25-Apr-12
  • Last Updated on: 20-Apr-11

Note that the registration was updated in April of this year, indicating active interest in keeping the URL active.

Could we soon have an online news source to compete with The Union? This might make for a more interesting election cycle. We might see a little more vigor in digging into the history of local candidates. Competition is a good thing.

Another good thing is that even online newspapers need reporters and editors. Having a new online news source in Nevada County may create some local jobs for ex-Swift Staffers who are still living in the County. I wonder if the FUE might be interested?
