The San Francisco Business Times has the story, Dell is expanding their research center in Santa Clara by hiring 700 new employees.

California Governor Jerry Brown helped open a new Dell Inc.  research center in Santa Clara on Wednesday.

Michael Dell, the chairman and CEO of Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) joined Brown for the ceremony at what will ultimately be a 240,000 square foot campus with about 700 employees. When Dell is finished moving those workers into the area sometime next year, it will have a total of 1,500 employees in Silicon Valley.

Dell said his company is “making significant and thoughtful investments to develop and acquire industry-leading intellectual property.”

It is always good to have a research facility located in an industry cluster, as it provides a pool of experienced employees, that can switch companies as needed when the work load ebbs and flows. Some of the intellectual property the Dell maybe  looking for are experienced employees who currently work for HP, Sun Micro, Orcale, and Apple.  Given the recent design laps in Dell lap top products they could use an infusion of ideas from some former Apple employees.

Either that or there are some “as of yet” undiscovered financial incentives funded by taxpayers while the State continues to go bankrupt. I wonder what the political makeup is of Dell and it’s employee base? A little investigative journalism may be in order!

Good coverage Russ. Putting 700 more desk workers here into Silicon Valley makes sense for the reasons stated. Sadly California won’t be collecting any taxes on stuff made by these workers since manufacturing is still leaving CA.

I bet they will hire engineers from India. But hey, maybe this is real?
