Unadulterated AP bovine scat in The Union

Russ Steele

Seth Borenstein writes about science for the AP and would have trouble tell the truth if his mother’s life depended on it. He writes [my emphasis}:

WASHINGTON — A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.

The study of the world’s surface temperatures by Richard Muller was partially bankrolled by a foundation connected to global warming deniers. He pursued long-held skeptic theories in analyzing the data. He was spurred to action because of “Climategate,” a British scandal involving hacked emails of scientists.

Yet he found that the land is 1.6 degrees warmer than in the 1950s. Those numbers from Muller, who works at the University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, match those by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA.

You can read the rest of Borenstein bovine scat HERE but before you do consider this, Richard Muller was never a global warming skeptic. Details at New Busters

… physicist Richard Muller of Berkeley — embraced the theory of man-made global warming 30 years ago. An online search easily disproved his claim of skepticism. He co-authored a book, “Physics For Future Presidents,” that explained climate change among other things. Now he has re-branded himself a former skeptic — the better to sell global warming.

… Richard Muller is not who he says he is. He is an advocate of the theory of man-made global warming.

… From Grist on October 6, 2008 (Note the title, “Author and physicist Richard A. Muller chats with Grist about getting science back in the White Hous” [sic] — Ed.): “The bottom line is that there is a consensus — the [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] — and the president needs to know what the IPCC says. Second, they say that most of the warming of the last 50 years is probably due to humans.” … “back in the early ’80s, I resigned from the Sierra Club over the issue of global warming. At that time, they were opposing nuclear power. What I wrote them in my letter of resignation was that, if you oppose nuclear power, the U.S. will become much more heavily dependent on fossil fuels, and that this is a pollutant to the atmosphere that is very likely to lead to global warming.

Now to the “Temperatures really are rising rapidly” cow pie:

Here is a chart that shows the rapid rise. But, then look a the last ten years of the BEST data below.

Judith Curry which was co-author on the BEST papers calls out Muller for hiding the truth in this article in the UK Mail HERE.

Like the scientists exposed then by leaked emails from East Anglia University’s Climatic Research Unit, her colleagues from the BEST project seem to be trying to ‘hide the decline’ in rates of global warming.

In fact, Prof Curry said, the project’s research data show there has been no increase in world temperatures since the end of the Nineties – a fact confirmed by a new analysis that The Mail on Sunday has obtained.

‘There is no scientific basis for saying that warming hasn’t stopped,’ she said. ‘To say that there is detracts from the credibility of the data, which is very unfortunate.’

However, Prof Muller denied warming was at a standstill.

‘We see no evidence of it [global warming] having slowed down,’ he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. There was, he added, ‘no levelling off’.

A graph issued by the BEST project also suggests a continuing steep increase.

Here is what Judith Curry has to say about the Muller BESt Graphic on her blog Climate Etc.

‘I agree that the way the data is presented in the graph “hides the decline.”‘ and adds, “I thought the project was a great idea, and I still do, but it currently has a tarnish on it.  Lets see what we can do about this.”

So now we know the Muller never was a global warming skeptic and that over the past ten years there has been any acceleration of temperatures. . Once again demonstrating that Seth Borenstein has problems with the truth.

I was wondering how long it would take you to react to The Union story. I knew you read it, Russ, because the thermometer nearest Banner Mt. went up about ten degrees.

  2. Russ says:

Ackerman was uncomfortable with me being a unpaid Union columnist for the Union, when I wrote two articles about global warming, and he suggested that I stop writing for The Union as a columnist. He said, he had professional columnist to write about global warming, he did not need my columns. And, now readers have to suffer through this crap. I think Ackerman is a warmer, rather than a skeptical thinker.

  3. I have exchanged emails with Seth over the years and found him to be a total ass.

  4. Drewski says:

Two Points: (1) Skeptics roundly cackled that professor Phil Jones refused to acknowledge warming (statistically speaking) over a 13 year period (because it hadn’t met the minimum 15 year minimum time length). Of course, when 15 years actually passed and Jones said warming had, in fact, occurred, skeptics didn’t pay attention. Now they cackle that warming hasn’t occurred since the very high El Nino year of 1998 (another 13 year period) although the earth recorded 11 of the top 12 high land temperature years in that same period (crazy — huh?).

    (2) Curry is talking about land measurements only and according to satellite data, the oceans are heating up even faster than land and as proof: 2005 and 2010 are the 2 hottest land AND sea years in the historical record.

The more you learn, the more skeptical you become of skeptics.

I am hoping that you can back up that statement with some facts. You can start here: http://www.climate4you.com/index.htm

There has not been any acceleration in sea level temperatures since about 2003. Perhaps your can provide some data to support your claim. You might want to check out how the data is being jiggered to show a rise here: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/10/24/tisdale-on-the-new-hide-the-decline-version-of-ocean-heat-content-data/

      • Drewski says:

Thanx Russ for that Climate4you site — excellent.

Why did you choose 2003 as your base year for ocean temps? Could it be that it is the very highest point (excluding present day, of course) that you could find on that entire graph? If you went back 13 years (although unscientific) you would see a marked increase in ocean temps and if you went back 15 years (minimum standard) then the increase is more dramatic.

Strange you point me to a WUWT site that only shows upward graphs as way of countering my point of upward temperatures. What’s Up With That?

  5. Bob says:

Copied form an email from me to Jeff Ackerman this morning.

I read The Union’s reprint of the article “Skeptic finds he now agrees global warming is real”, and then Russ Steele’s critique of that article. If The Union does not publish a disclaimer I will be forced to surmise that The Union supports the opinion of Borenstein and chooses to promote the theory of global warming. Also If you choose to ignore the allegations directed specifically at you personally in comments by Russ Steele I will be forced to accept them as accurate. I expect you would react the same with respect to any exchange of this nature. The intention of this notification is to offer you a chance to give me reason not accept these assumptions as accurate.

  6. steve enos says:

So “Bob” stomps his feet and makes threats to Jeff Ackerman and makes twisted, tin foil hat statements like:

“If The Union does not publish a disclaimer I will be forced to…”

“I will be forced to accept them as accurate”

“The intention of this notification is to offer you a chance to give me reason not accept these assumptions as accurate”

    What a hoot!

  7. Bob says:

Sorry Steve. Doesn’t work. No feet stomping here. For that matter you can’t even deduce whether or not I am in favor of The Union supporting global warming nor if my intention is to validate what Russ has asserted regarding Jeff or not. You can do better than that. Or maybe not. I not only didn’t make any threats but I even stated that Jeff would take the same stance. If you continue to want to comment on my comments I advise you to try to think before you leap. Your making a fool of yourself! Again.

  8. steve enos says:

You bet “Bob”, use what ever version of your own reality you want. So you demand The Union publish a “disclaimer” for a torty they ran.. really… is this a joke?

The you make threats… “If The Union does not… I will be forced to… The intention of this notification is to offer you a chance to give me reason not accept these assumptions as accurate”.

    What a hoot!

Seems “Bob” is also part of the Charlie Sheen “winning” team.

  9. Bob says:

Keep digging Steve! I don’t bite on fake bait.

  10. Greg Goodknight says:

Dr. Muller has clearly been on the record as believing CO2 is a danger to the climate. He has never been a “skeptic” on the subject. However, he was reamed by “the Team”, a general term for Climategaters and their cronies, for cutting them a new one over the “hide the decline” debacle. Here’s an 80+ minute lecture, try to find Muller as a “denier” there:
    http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/13429263
He’s in the tank for CO2, but awfully clear that even if everyone in the USA drives a Prius (as Muller does) and US emissions plummet, global emissions will continue to rise due to 3rd world emissions, primarily from China. None of the feel good measures promoted by the Borensteins of the world would do anything positive whatsoever.

The only thing the BEST dataset has proven so far is that if you use the same data as the Team, you get similar results. Yes, the surface temperature data shows a rising of the latter 20th century. One of the BEST papers released prematurely, before review, even goes so far as to note how temps seem to track the Atlantic ocean surface temps and, if that holds up, the rise in temps due to human activity will need to be revised downwards, but Seth hasn’t trumpeted that one.

There are, to date, no reviewed papers using the BEST dataset. The brouhaha is premature, but then Borenstein has been carrying water for Alarmists for years and was primed to help with this bizarre extra-academic PR campaign by Muller, who does excel at self promotion, but no one is better than NASA’s Hansen who made a million bucks last year. Nice work.
