Paging Mary Nichols — Tylenol causes asthma not ozone

Russ Steele

During the Prop 23 debate Mary Nichols, CARB Chairwoman came to Nevada City and blamed global warming on the development of ozone, resulting in asthma is children. Therefore we needed to implement AB-32 sooner rather then later. Now we know know that there may be another reason for asthma is children — tylenol type products.

The epidemiologic association between acetaminophen use and asthma prevalence and severity in children and adults is well established. A variety of observations suggest that acetaminophen use has contributed to the recent increase in asthma prevalence in children: (1) the strength of the association; (2) the consistency of the association across age, geography, and culture; (3) the dose-response relationship; (4) the timing of increased acetaminophen use and the asthma epidemic; (5) the relationship between per-capita sales of acetaminophen and asthma prevalence across countries; (6) the results of a double-blind trial of ibuprofen and acetaminophen for treatment of fever in asthmatic children; and (7) the biologically plausible mechanism of glutathione depletion in airway mucosa. Until future studies document the safety of this drug, children with asthma or at risk for asthma should avoid the use of acetaminophen…”

In plain language it is the ingredients in Tylenol, not air pollution that is causing the asthma epidemic.  But, if you blame it on air pollution then CARB can kill jobs, raise fee’s and create more government jobs.  CARB lied about global warming, and then that ozone pollution was causing asthma in children. Now we are closer to the truth.

Let’s see, several years ago they found that the decline of the spotted owl in the Pacific Northwest was due to and invasive owl species from Canada not logging in old growth forests. That should mean its time to look at the logging restrictions imposes to save the spotted owl but won’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen. I wouldn’t hold my breath about changes by CARB to the asthma connection either. They have an agenda. Only the fact that support the agenda are important.

For a guys who is a skeptic you sure seem to grasp at straws to try to make your case.

I guess it is possible that asthma has several causes, eh? I don’t think anyone ever said air pollution was the sole cause of asthma…but in your world I guess it is an either/or proposition.

I could post about 20 studies that show a direct link between poor air quality and asthma but it would do no good.
