Why? (updated)

Russ Steele

I was cruising the gonevadacounty.com web sites this morning when I spotted this:

My question is why is there an active link to the Pelline Web site FoodWineArt Magazine and not to the Chamber Web Sites in this box?  The Grass Valley Chamber, Nevada City Chamber, Penn Valley Chamber, and Truckee Donnor Chamber all have very active websites.

I hope this was not a covert attempt to promote the FoodWineArt Magazine, while short changing the Chamber of Commerce Sites who are all working together. It seems to me that every government agency should be working together to promote tourism in Nevada County.  Let’s promote every possible hot link!

Update:  Jefff Pelline writes:

This post is incorrect

The live hyperlinks to all of the chambers are provided on the very same page, just below where you cut off the screen shot.

This is a false and misleading statement, and I ask that you correct it.

While it is true there are links buried below, I still wonder why not have links in the box above?   Was my post misleading?   More links the better in my mind!

It appears that there is a little bit of self-dealing going on. Failing to link the chambers to the GoNevadaCounty website is either a rookie mistake or intentional.

      Barry,

There was a link below in smaller type, but not in the box recognizing the Chambers for their photos contributions. It seemed to me that all of those recognized should get the same status, a hot link if one was available. I found it interesting that when you click on the Food Wine Art page and then close it, the reader is back to the Internet, you do not return to the gonevadacounty.com page. If you click on the links I provided, if you close the page, you are right back to the starting page. Again, another rookie mistake. It is always better to return the reader to back to the main page, not dump them back on the Internet.

      • Barry Pruett says:

That is an easy fix. In the code identifying the hotlink you just type target=”Screen” and a new screen will pop up for the hot link. Very simple…but you would have to know HTML code to do it.

Didn’t somebody get a content contract in this field not long ago – who wrote that piece?

  3. Barry Pruett says:

Clearly and if linking to a private site owned and operated by the content provider of this publicly funded site, there should be a link to each Chamber in the credits for the photographs. Good reporting Russ. Way to stay on top of things.

  4. Bob W says:

    Tacky, Tacky, Tacky!

But then what would you expect? Just more no talent hack stuff.

  5. Greg Goodknight says:

Pelline has a history of lying (JP knows I can prove that) but in this case, he’s just factually wrong. RS, you were both literally correct and not misleading.

It was tacky not to put in hyperlinks within the same box for photo credits but was probably just laziness, not special treatment.

  6. Barry Pruett says:

Good job Russ: Looks like your critical review of prompted the requisite change to the GoNevadaCounty.com website. Way to keep the administrator honest.

  7. Excellent Russ. There are people trying to leap over others backs and you tripped them up.
