How Dumb is This – Opinion Behind Union PayWall?

Russ Steele

This morning The Union stating putting the most interesting stories behind a pay-wall. You have to be subscriber to read the local news and opinion. The reason that people write Columns and Other Voices is to be heard, or in this case read.  I wonder how those writers feel about being behind a pay-wall?  It limits the distribution of their ideas.

Putting the Opinion Section behind the pay-wall does not make much sense to me, especially George Rebane’s monthly Column, when it can be read on his blog Rebane’s Rumination for free.  All opinion should be free.

I usually checked The Union Online every morning to see what was happening in the community. But, with the pay-wall in place, it does not make much sense to waste time going on the site. Other free local news sources include KNCO OnLine and YubaNet. KNCO is a more conservative source and YubaNet a little more on the liberal side.

The SAC Bee Capitol Alert on an RSS feed can also be a useful source. You can also get KNCO on an RSS Feed, which pushes the news to your browser.  RSS sources and  readers are useful tools for news junkies.  If your are political junkie, Rough and Tumble can help.

If you use these tools, you will soon overcome the loss of loosing online access to the important news stores behind The Union pay-wall.  And, you can also use the RSS feed on this blog for some insight to local, state and national issues.

Please comment on The Union  Pay-wall.

    Not feeling any withdrawal yet.

They have to try something, you can’t blame them, after all they are a newspaper and all of them are in the same boat. You couldn’t read it before the .net unless you bought a paper or subscribed – rock and hard place

This might be a trial run by corporate. It’s not on some of the other Swift News websites.

Heck, at the lowest bargain rate of $1.00 per day I’d be further ahead buying the paper for $.50 at the local news rack machine if I saw some headline I couldn’t live without seeing or couldn’t find on KNCO or YubaNet.
