I realize Arctic sea ice loss is one of those headline grabbing phenomena but I think its a fools errand to use it to track climate. There is a lot of evidence that temperature in the arctic can be correlated to the state of the AMO. This author estimate that as much as a third can be attributed to it and we are currently at the peak of the warm phase. Couple that with the variances caused by storms (2012) or strong persistent winds (2007) and you have an extraordinarily noisy signal to analyze. Ocean heat content or average global sea level rise tells you much more about what happens with the climate.
